This specimen is Smithsonite from the Kintore Open Cut, Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, measuring 66 x 45 x 30 mm and weighing 117 g. It is recorded with the David Vince Collection. Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate and a classic secondary mineral of the oxidised zone above zinc-bearing ore, typically forming botryoidal or crusty masses with a distinctive soapy lustre. Broken Hill's massive zinc-lead orebody has supplied Smithsonite in a range of colours from the oxidation of its primary sphalerite ore, and the Kintore Open Cut is one of several workings within the field where this secondary mineralisation has been well documented. At 66 x 45 x 30 mm, the specimen is a solid cabinet piece for the species. Smithsonite's characteristic rounded, crusty habit makes it a distinctive addition to a secondary-mineral suite, and it benefits from a stable display position given its brittle nature. The specimen's documented provenance is the David Vince Collection.
