Fluorite from the Huanggang Fe-Sn deposit, Hexigten Banner, Inner Mongolia, China, measuring 66 × 64 × 39 mm and weighing 187 grams. This is a deposit-specific example of a familiar collector mineral, with an attribution that places it in an iron-and-tin mineralising setting. The locality is an important part of the specimen's identity, beyond the Fluorite name alone.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride and belongs to the halide mineral class. Its composition is quite different from the silicates, oxides and sulphides that make up many other cabinet specimens. It can occur in a range of mineralising environments, so a collection of Fluorites can become a study of geology and locality as much as an exercise in comparing crystal shapes or colours.

Angular, partly translucent crystals overlap into a compact group, combining subdued brownish interiors with cooler grey-green faces. The repeated triangular-looking faces give the specimen a strongly geometric appearance. It is a rewarding contrast with the cubic forms many collectors first associate with Fluorite, showing how varied the outward expression of this familiar species can be. The specimen comes from the David Vince Collection. Its collecting interest lies in representing a specific Chinese deposit within a species found around the world. A carefully documented locality example encourages a more rewarding comparison than a mineral name by itself, and the combination of source, measurements and collection history gives this Fluorite a clear individual place in that wider story.
