Atacamite from New Cornwall Mine, Kadina, South Australia, Australia. This specimen measures 76 × 53 × 37 mm and weighs 125 g. Lustrous dark green atacamite crystals line cavities in a brown matrix.
Atacamite is a copper chloride hydroxide associated with the oxidation of copper deposits. It is chemically different from green copper carbonates such as malachite. Looking closely at the cavity linings is a good way to appreciate the crystal growth described on this specimen.
The specimen comes from the David Vince Collection and retains a named Kadina mine locality. For a collector interested in South Australian copper minerals, that combination of occurrence and collection history is more informative than colour alone. Both deserve to remain with the piece.
